RE-USABLE CLOTH FACE MASKS

Mask mandates are coming again. Are you ready? I have a large batch of cloth face masks in adult and kid sizes available. They are made from 100% cotton fabric and hold up well to repeated washings. I want all of you to be safe so, please, let me know if you need some.

WHAT DO YOU CHARGE?

I do not charge for my masks. All I ask is, if and only if you are financially stable, you make a donation to help offset the cost of materials and shipping, if applicable, to help me get more masks to those in need. If you have recently become unemployed or face other financial hardship, don't feel you need to contribute. Your mask is on the house. If you aren't in that boat, give what you feel is fair and what you can afford. Anything above and beyond my direct expenses will be donated to the Oregon Food Bank. I became a mask maker because your life is worth my time, not to make a profit.

HOW MUCH AND HOW DO PEOPLE DONATE?

It runs the gamut. Some pay $0. Others have given $100 for a single mask. A kind gentleman, who ended up not even needing a mask, donated $50 anyway to help pay for others to get masks. It's entirely up to you to decide. I use both PayPal and Venmo, and have also received cash and checks.

HOW DO I GET A MASK?

First, decide which masks you'd like. I have two Flickr albums (www.flickr.com/photos/themoozoo/albums), which I update after every order, of the masks I currently have available. You can view them here: Do not use the Photostream. If a print is not in one of the albums, it is not available. Code numbers beginning with K are kid size. Everything else is adult size.

Once you've decided, use the form at the bottom of this page to submit your request.

I live in the Bethany area on the west side of Portland - 5915 NW Snowlily Drive. If you are in the Portland area, please utilize my contactless pickup. I will notify you via email when your masks are ready. They will be put on a shelf by my front door in a clearly labelled Ziploc bag for you to pick up at your convenience. I have distributed hundreds of masks this way without issue.

If you do not live nearby, I will mail your masks to you. For simplicity's sake, I use USPS flat rate Priority Mail exclusively. It's a minimum of $7.75 per shipment. I know there are cheaper methods, but I'm doing all of this on my own and don't have the time to mess with sorting postage and/or packaging materials.

HOW MANY MASKS CAN I GET?

Since I am making these by myself, I have a limited number at any given time. Please, be considerate of others and request only what you need. I don't want to have to put a hard limit on the number, but I will if I feel it is necessary.

Also, I only make two masks of each print at a time. I rarely have more than that on hand. If you need higher quantities, let me know and I'll see if I have enough left of that fabric to make what you need.

WHAT SIZE MASKS DO YOU HAVE?

I make two sizes: adult and kid. Adult masks are approx 4"x8" finished with (3) 1" pleats and about 6.25" of elastic on each side. My adult masks are one size fits most. They are large enough to be used as an N95 mask cover or worn as a stand-alone mask. Kid masks are approx 3"x7" finished with (2) 1" pleats and about 5.25" of elastic on each side.

DO YOUR MASKS HAVE A FILTER POCKET OR NOSE CLIP?

My masks do not have filter pockets. Studies have shown that a double layer of quilting cotton is more than sufficient to contain respiratory droplets when observing social distancing. There is no need for additional materials. My adult masks are large enough to be worn as an N95 mask cover, if you really feel the need for added filtration. I make my masks to last a long time and stand up to repeated washings. Any sort of metal inside them would defeat that purpose. Therefore, no nose clips either.

HOW DO I GET A KID/ADULT MASK MADE FROM THIS ADULT/KID MASK FABRIC?

Since I don't buy a lot of each fabric, the number of masks I can make from each is very limited. If you see a print you really like, but it's not available in the size you want, ask me. I'll see if I have enough fabric left to make you one.

MY MASK DOESN'T FIT. WHAT DO I DO?

My masks are one-size-fits-most, but not all. If your mask doesn't fit and you are in the area, I will adjust the length of the elastic bands for you. Contact me about returning them. Otherwise, find someone in your area who can do alterations. If you cannot, please give your masks to someone else who can use them rather than throwing them away.

DO YOU SMOKE OR HAVE PETS?

This is a completely smoke-free home. We do have two cats and a dog though.

WHY IS MY MASK SO STIFF?

Due to differences in manufacturing, some fabrics are very stiff. All of the fabrics I use are 100% cotton. I wash and dry all fabrics before cutting using Method Free+Clear detergent and only wool dryer balls. I did not use any fabric softeners - liquid or sheets - so your mask fabric might still feel very stiff. Once you have washed it yourself a few times, it should soften. If it doesn't and is unbearable to wear, please, contact me and I will get you a different one.

WHAT'S WITH ALL OF THE COWS?

My nickname is Moo and I like cows. It's that simple. Who doesn't love a cow? Life is too short for boring masks. Have some fun!

HOW MANY MASKS HAVE YOU MADE/GIVEN AWAY?

As of July 2021, I have made 1157 and given away 952 in 16 states. I will continue making them as long as people need them. Please feel free to share this page with anyone you know who is in need.
